Walking through Grand Central Market you really are spoilt for choice where to eat but after a lap or two I had decided to get a burger at La Mamma Burger on their opening day.... When placing my order I quickly discovered that it had in fact been open for 3 months, they joked they feel the sign could stay up for at least a year.
You place your order leave your name and then fight for one of the few seats around the counter and you can watch your burger being created in front of you.
MEAT - Slightly over the medium rare I ordered however the taste was very good it didnt really matter. Good beef, well seasoned and well cooked although not as good as my previous patty at Comme Ca there was no fault in it either.
TOPPINGS - A great selection here. My free toppings were lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles, then American cheese and chipolte sauce at 50c a pop. Each element was perfect, fresh, big flavour and portioned so they all complimented each other.
SIDES – Due to this being the 1st of a planned 2-3 today I only purchased the burger. The onion rings and chips that were being served up looked pretty special as well though.
One of the best burgers I have ever had, and unquestionably the best in this price range.
Loved everything about this burger, could not fault any area and each part was perfectly balanced and complimentary to each other.
If we didn't have somewhere else to be I would have ordered at least another. You can spend hours in this market area and I would recommend doing so, make sure La Mamma Burger is visited.
Overall Rating 10/10
I have discovered that this burger joint has unfortunately shut down. This has literally broke my heart and I would love to understand why.
I looked at a few over reviews, over at yelp, and I am assuming the poor early reviews they received meant that this place never took off.
The reviews had always been improving from around the time I went there and since I left LA, alas LA Mamma Burger is no more.
Please contact me if you know the owner of anyone who worked here who can shed some light on why it is no more. Hopefully when I return to LA next year they will be back.
