The Burger Joint, Parker Meridan Hotel Lobby, Manhattan, New York

Burger: "The Works"
Price: $8.27

Hidden away behind a curtain in Le Parker Méridien Hotel lies one of the most recognisable burger restaurants in the world - The Burger Joint. This was the only restaurant I revisited from my first visit. My memory was of one of the coolest shacks I'd been in, with a burger that was nothing like I'd had before and it left me speechless. I've gone through my fair share of burgers since then...

The queue spiralled around the side of the lobby and it was around 50 minutes from the end of this line to being served.

The venue was as cool as I'd remembered, but the taste didn't live up to the memory. 'The Works' comes with lettuce, tomato, onions, pickle, ketchup, mustard and mayo. With all this going on and a drowning of 3 sauces, the patty despite seeming of a decent quality, was lost. I've always found when the patty is flame grilled(like it is here) you get the 'burger king' flavour, rather then the beef. Anyone else find this? It was cooked to a good standard and was the size and shape was also without fault.

I'd suggest the cheeseburger and just add one or two toppings to really taste what this burger's like.

Will there be a 3rd visit? Unlikely. If I was passing and there was no queue I'd go in, it's not worth waiting for.

Overall Rating 5/10

  1. What saddens me is that I have amazingly fond memories of heading off to the midtown location, being hypnotized by its concealed location, and truly enjoying the burgers. It's one of the first places I ever went to (or was dragged to) when I got to New York quite a while back.
